When to Go

The best time to visit the Florida Keys

When to go to the Florida Keys for the finest weather, the clearest water, and the fewest crowds, and which trade-offs each season asks of you.

The short answer

The best time to visit the Florida Keys is roughly November through May, when the weather is warm and dry and the water is clear. December through April is the peak for a reason. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms, and late summer into fall is hurricane season and the quietest, cheapest stretch.

The Keys have real seasons, even if the temperature barely moves. What changes is the humidity, the water clarity, the crowds, and the small matter of hurricane season, and timing the trip around those is most of the battle.

Winter and spring (November to May): the sweet spot

This is the Keys at their best: warm, dry days, low humidity, and clear water for diving and snorkeling. It is also the busiest and priciest stretch, especially around the winter holidays and spring break, so the best rooms and charters book well ahead.

Summer (June to August): hot, but rewarding

Summer brings heat, humidity, and near-daily afternoon storms that usually pass quickly. The upside is warm, calm water, excellent fishing, and lower rates than the winter peak. If you can handle the humidity and start your days early, it is a fine time to be on the water.

Fall (September and October): the quiet gamble

Early fall is the low season for a reason, the heart of hurricane season, but it is also the quietest and least expensive time of year, with plenty of settled days between systems. It suits flexible travelers who watch the forecast and value having the place to themselves.

In the Keys the calendar is really a conversation about water and weather, and the winter months win it more often than not.
