When to Go
Jackson Hole, season by season: when to go for what
Jackson Hole is really four destinations in one. Here is what each season offers, from world-class skiing to Grand Teton and the quiet gold of fall.
The short answer
Jackson Hole has two peak seasons and two quiet ones. Winter, December through March, is for world-class skiing. Summer, June through September, is for Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Fall brings elk, gold aspens, and fewer people, while spring is the quietest and least predictable.
The valley changes character completely from one season to the next. The mountains are the constant; everything else, the color, the crowds, the reason to come, turns over four times a year.
Winter (December to March): the ski season
This is Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in its element, deep snow, serious terrain, and cozy luxury at the end of the day. Off the slopes there are sleigh rides through the elk refuge and long dinners by the fire. The winter holidays are the busiest and priciest weeks of the year, so book them far ahead.
Summer (June to September): the national parks
Summer is the only season with Grand Teton and Yellowstone both fully open, which makes it the time for wildlife, rafting the Snake River, and long days on the trails. The light lasts well into the evening. It is also the busiest non-ski stretch, so the best lodges go early.
Fall and spring: the quiet shoulders
Late September and October are the connoisseur's season: gold aspens, the elk rut, crisp air, and a fraction of the summer crowds. Spring, in April and May, is muddy and unpredictable, but it brings the lowest rates and newborn wildlife across the valley, a fair trade if you value quiet over certainty.
In Jackson the mountains are the constant. The season decides whether you meet them in white, green, or gold.

Common questions
What is the best time to visit Jackson Hole?
September and early October offer the best balance: warm days, cool nights, golden aspens, active wildlife, and far fewer crowds than summer or the ski-season holidays.
Is Jackson Hole worth visiting in summer?
Yes. Summer is the only time both Grand Teton and Yellowstone are fully open, making it the best season for wildlife, hiking, and rafting, though it is also the busiest.
When is skiing best in Jackson Hole?
January and February bring the deepest, most reliable snow. December has holiday energy and higher prices, while March offers longer, sunnier days and softer spring conditions.
